A budget spreadsheet that checks itself: 4 tabs, 500 rows, zero formula errors

A Monthly Budget Planner built in Excel to show how we build spreadsheets: a Start Here tab, a dashboard that fills itself in, drop-down lists, data checks and charts. Verified in Excel with no formula errors. Download it free at www.quantnova.site/free/Monthly-Budget-Planner.xlsx.

The challenge

Most budget spreadsheets break the first time someone types in the wrong cell. We wanted a file that a non-technical person could use for a year without breaking it, and that looks finished the moment it is opened.

The solution
  • Separated typing from calculating: pale yellow cells are for input, everything else is a formula the user never touches.
  • Added drop-down lists for category and type, and a rule that only accepts positive amounts, so wrong entries are refused at the point of typing.
  • Built a Dashboard tab with income, spending, money left, budget used, remaining budget per category with over-budget rows in red, and two charts.
  • Opened and recalculated the file in Microsoft Excel and checked every formula cell for errors before release.
  • Built a second sample the same way, a Home Inventory tracker: www.quantnova.site/free/Home-Inventory-Sample.xlsx.
